Federico Cortese, Associate conductor
|
Federico Cortese assumed the post of music director
of the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras in 1999. He has
conducted operatic and symphonic engagements throughout the United
States, Australia and Europe. From 1998-2002, he served as assistant
conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa. In
addition to his scheduled concerts, Mr. Cortese has led the Boston
Symphony several times on short notice in Symphony Hall and at
Tanglewood, most notably performing Beethoven's 9th
Symphony and Puccini's Madama
Butterfly.
Mr. Cortese has conducted several prominent
orchestras, including those of Atlanta, Dallas, and the BBC Scottish
Symphony Orchestra. Opera engagements have included, among others,
Maggio Musicale, the Spoleto Festival in Italy and United States,
Boston's Lyric Opera and the Saint Louis Opera, Finnish National
Opera, and Opera Australia. This season's engagements included Mr.
Cortese's debut with the Sydney Symphony in Australia, as well as a
production of André Previn's A
Streetcar Named Desire with the Washington National
Opera.
Mr. Cortese studied composition and conducting
at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome and subsequently
studied at the Hochschule fur Musik in Vienna. In addition, he has
been a conducting fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center. Besides
music, Mr. Cortese studied literature and humanities and holds a law
degree from La Sapienza University in Rome. This is his third
summer with AYO. |
