Richard Mackey, French horn

Born in Philadelphia, Richard Mackey joined the horn section of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in January of 1973; he retired from the BSO at the end of the 2005 Tanglewood season, after thirty-two years of service to the orchestra.  A Tanglewood Music Center alumnus, he attended the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied horn with former BSO principal player William Valkenier and solfege with Gaston Dufresne, who was a bass player with the Boston Symphony.  During his career, Mr. Mackey was also a member of the orchestras of Kansas City -- 4th horn, San Antonio -- 2nd horn, Detroit -- 2nd horn, New Orleans -- 1st horn, Cleveland -- 3rd horn, and Japan Philharmonic -- 1st horn. Before joining the BSO, he was a freelance musician in the Los Angeles studios for eight years. He also attended the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont for nine summers. Mr. Mackey’s first and continuing musical love is Mozart; he collects scores, facsimiles, books, first and early editions, and just about anything relevant to that composer. This is his second summer with AYO.
